Participatory Democracy In Action (tiny snippet)

So, I had to drop stuff off at the dry cleaners this morning (yeah, you know me, all hoodies and jeans) and I decided to grab a coffee at the *bucks. Usually I don't intermingle with the morning junkies, but I gave it a shot since I was there, practically.

While I was prepping my "large drip with room" with two raw sugars and a sloshing of half+half, I listened in to a quick conversation between a guy (a "regular" in no hurry) who was reading the Washington Post and a woman obviously en route to work mixing coffee, milk, and sugar at the freebar (she's in a hurry, of course).

This is what I heard:
Woman: So, Joe, what's in the paper today?

Guy: Ahhh, dunno. [theatrical shuffles through some pages] The usual stuff. Politics and all that....

Woman: Eh. I know! [crinkles nose as if stinky cheese were present]

Guy: Yeah, they overdid it this time, 'ya know? They're way over the top with this stuff. It's just too much!

Woman: Oh, completely.

Guy: I figure I'll wait for a few more primaries to go by and when there's a just a couple of 'em left I'll see what they stand for.

Woman: Yeah, good idea.

I've been accused of being a little "into" politics, but dang it if this tiny snippet of a conversation doesn't simply encapsulate all that's wrong with us. We're too comfy, too lethargic (for being so over-caffeinated), and too goddamn dumb numb to realize the consequences of inaction.
