"I wonder if people like Diane Arbus ever went through their stuff and thought, man, I want to do something that is Greatness. I wonder how much greatness is an after the fact, arbitrarily assigned thing. People like Cristo do things that are called "great" but he sets about doing things that he calls "great" rather than just doing his stuff and letting history decide if his stuff was great.
Those WPA photogs were just doing their jobs and probably didn't give that much thought to greatness. Or maybe they knew it when they saw it. Who knows?"
